The developer behind the highly popular poker roguelike game Balatro, LocalThunk, is set to release a free "major gameplay update" sometime in 2025.
The studio's announcement comes after it was revealed that the game has already sold more than 2 million units. The upcoming update is said to bring "new ideas and strategies to the game" and will be available for all platforms that Balatro is on.
Balatro Will Get a Free Major Update in 2025
The game, which is playable on PC via Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox, was first released earlier this year. Since its launch, Balatro has become a smash hit due to its compelling gameplay loop that invites players to keep going.
While Balatro involves poker hands, you are not given any chips or money to gamble with and instead, your objective is to build high-scoring hands.
This could involve things like discarding cards, modifying your cards, and collecting powerful jokers that influence the game in a variety of ways, according to The Verge.

The developer also said that they are opposed to Balatro becoming a true gambling game; he stipulated in his will that the franchise can never be sold to a gambling company or casino. With how successful the game is, it has remained in the upper ranks of top-played games on Steam Deck.
On top of the upcoming major update next time, LocalThunk said that there are a few more announcements in the works that players can anticipate. These will be revealed over the next couple of months. The developer also revealed that Balatro is in development for iPhone and Android.
The Success of the Poker Roguelike
Despite LocalThunk's announcement of the update next year, the developer did not provide detailed information on what the "ideas and strategies" coming to the game are. However, many players are expecting them to drastically shake up how Balatro is played, said WindowsCentral.
There are still two other Balatro announcements that have not been made public and no one knows what they could include. Some people are hoping that they will be able to get their hands on a physical Balatro deck sometime soon.
While the developer did not divulge the inclusions of the 2025 update, some players speculate that it could include new Joker cards and more deck types. There could also be more game modes and mechanics that the developer has a chance to introduce.
Many players are also hoping that LouisF will also get to compose some more music for Balatro due to how popular his previous works have been, according to PCGamesN.
