Dungeonborne’s Steam Success Dampened by Absent Feature

One of the newer games on Steam, Dungeonborne is rattling the cages in the dungeon crawler scene. At the very least, this game comes across extremely similar to Escape from Tarkov and Marauders, putting a rather refreshing spin on the genre with its mix of magic and multiplayer. Even as it proves to be one of the more successful titles, some players are finding it unsatisfactory and have been calling for a key change to the game in hopes of making it more enjoyable.

The Call for a PvE Mode

The rather simple game play is such: players select a class, loot dungeons, and kill other enemies or players. This is a high-friction game, with the central focus of the game on multiplayer interactions. Many gamers are requesting a PvE mode so as to experience co-operation against AI enemies without the interference of other players. This request is due to high-level players dominating matches by preying on new people for easy loot.

Mixed Reviews and Future Possibilities

The same concerns are echoed in most of the reviews on Dungeonborne's Steam page. Some players complained that a PvE mode would improve the game. One of them said, "...it is fun vs AIs; however, it is frustrating as it is PvP." Other players responded, arguing that the very PvP part is what makes the challenge and what is interesting about this game. One of the Redditors mentioned that turning off PvP would make the game much easier and less able to be replayed.

Because Dungeonborne remains in early access, it's quite improbable that some type of explicit PvE mode will make its way to the game anytime soon. The developers of this game have been keen to keep the central tenets about being an extraction shooter. After all, it is game development; player feedback may always turn their sentiments around towards updates in the future. Currently, Dungeonborne strikes a balance between a multiplayer focus and the evolving expectations of a growing player base.
