MultiVersus Journey and Challenges
Available since July 2022, MultiVersus is a free-to-play platform fighter currently in open beta. It immediately drew millions of players across the globe with its peculiar characters and gameplay. However, it was announced by the developers at Player First Games in March 2023 that the game had stayed in an extended public test phase, after which the servers were closed down. This happened for a period of nine months, and it kept fans guessing.
In March 2024, Player First Games revealed that MultiVersus would make a comeback in May 2024, complete with new features that introduce updated netcode and a new set of characters. Further to that, it introduces PvE missions. It has held steady at over 4,000 average concurrent players on Steam despite its few controversies, including one bug that allowed players to purchase extra lives with their real money.
Warner Bros. Shifts Focus to Free-to-Play Market
The acquisition of Player First Games comes as Warner Bros. Games is shifting more to the free-to-play market, mostly specifically after disappointing sales from titles such as Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This turn of focus was highlighted back in March by JB Perrette, an executive at Warner Bros. Player First Games will continue to be helmed by its co-founders, Tony Huynh and Chris White, in terms of development.
Now, Player First Games will join the ranks of other celebrated studios like NetherRealm Studios, TT Games, Monolith Productions, and Avalanche Software.
