A rumor is spreading regarding Dragon Quest III HD-2D that claims the remake will feature a major change in appearance options for characters.
The rumor comes after a Japanese site, which has been considered reliable with leaked information, reported the moving away from male and female titled appearances. It alleges that the game will instead opt for Appearance A and Appearance B.

The site also said that the voice actors for the game, Nobuyuki Hiyama and Yuko Minaguchi will voice Appearance A and Appearance B, respectively. The remake is scheduled to be released on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, on Nov. 14, 2024, according to MyNintendoNews.
The rumors come as the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake was revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct to be coming to the company's handheld console. This particular installment in the franchise marks the first time that players can choose between a male and a female protagonist.
And while the idea behind that particular mechanic is being retained for the remake, the developer is modernizing its approach to it. In Dragon Quest III HD-2D, players will set out on a journey as The Hero in an effort to save the world from the dark forces of the evil Archfiend, Baramos.
You will be able to travel through a massive world filled with towns, dungeons, and caves to explore and you will meet a cast of lively characters. The game also features fights with ferocious monsters in modernized turn-based battles, said GoNintendo.

When the remake was first revealed, it came with a trailer that showed off a number of classic gameplay elements and how they were reimagined to fit the new HD-2D art style. There was also confirmation of remakes of Dragon Quest 1 and Dragon Quest 2 being in development and will launch in 2025.
Additionally, Dragon Quest III HD-2D has several new features added to the original, including performance modes on PlayStation 5 and three difficulty settings for players to choose from.
There are also other quality-of-life improvements that have been introduced, including an auto-save, the ability to save anywhere, and adjustable speed settings for movement and fights.
Modernizing Character Options
Following the unveiling of the remake, there have been a number of rumors that have floated around about the game other than the appearance options. The original leak came from user ryokutya2089.
The rumor, if accurate, suggests that Square Enix and Team Asano are trying to be more inclusive with the new appearance options. This is similar to how Pokemon games and Splatoon have used more inclusive appearance-based player character selection options recently.
The situation for Dragon Quest III HD-2D is supported by how job classes are no longer going to be distinguished by gender in the name either. Despite the original games giving players the option to choose between a male and female character, they have always been referred to as "Ortega's son."
The male hero is typically the default option and is designated to represent the game itself but the female hero has previously appeared in other spin-offs such as Dragon Quest Rivals, according to GameRant.
