Dungeonborne's Final Steam Playtest Attracts Thousands of Players Ahead of Early Access Launch

The final Steam playtest for Mithril Interactive's Dungeonborne has attracted thousands of eager adventurers to dive into its world ahead of the game's early access launch.

Players can get their hands on an open beta for the game now on Steam as the exact duration for the playtest has not yet been set. However, the developer is planning for it to last a week or two, and afterward, the game will launch in early access on Valve's gaming platform.

The beta itself is relatively easy to access and all you need to do is hit a button on the Steam store page to request an invite. There is no actual wait as the playtest is open to everyone and some were let in immediately after they clicked the button.

The playtest for Dungeonborne has not yet overtaken dungeon-crawling extraction Dark and Darker on the Steam concurrents chart. However, it has already peaked at a respectable 14,448 simultaneous players, which is relatively high, according to PCGamer.

Dungeonborne features a Diablo-like inventory and methodical first-person melee combat that is popular with a lot of players. The game also has several classes that feature the usual trade-offs such as speed or health, damage or healing, and come with unique abilities.

These include the skeletal cryomancer who was a moveable, area-of-effect Ice Storm attack that can hit multiple targets. But what some people are enjoying a lot about the game is how quickly they can get into a match.

One example is on the casual Clouseau Castle map where it only takes roughly 20 to 30 seconds between clicking the "Start" button and the game actually starting. This is relatively crucial, especially for titles that can end as abruptly and disappointingly as extraction games.

When you start out in Dungeonborne, you choose one of seven character classes; Fighter, Priest, Rogue, Swordmaster, Pyromancer, Cryomancer, and Death Knight. You can play either solo or alongside two other people, said PCGamesN.

A Unique Extraction Shooter

Your main objective in the game is to clear the monster, demon, and what-else-infested corridors of the map. The Clouseau Castle, in particular, is a decaying aristocratic stronghold that looks like it was ripped straight from the pages of Bam Stoker.

Dungeonborne is a grueling, nasty RPG that mixes extraction shooter mechanics that seem similar to Skyrim. Producer and head of development "Elvis" said that Skyrim and Dark and Darker are remarkable games in their own right.

However, he said that Dungeonborne has its own identity and sets itself apart by focusing on a completely different core experience for players. He noted that the team took the foundation of dungeon crawlers and combined it with the best elements from extraction looters, MOBAs, and fighting games.

The setting of the game is a bleak, medieval world that is lined with gothic spires and monsters hiding in dark corners.

Additionally, the realm that players find themselves in has a soul of its own and is capable of resurrecting the dead to raise arms once more and protect the treasures and riches that players are looking for, according to WorthPlaying.
