Why Did Dead by Daylight Choose to Tomb Raider's Lara Croft to the Survivor Roster?

Tomb Raider's Lara Croft is the latest iconic character to join the expansive survivor roster of Dead by Daylight and joins individuals such as Jill Valentine and Nicolas Cage.

Dead by Daylight has a roster filled with original characters and is also popular for its crossovers with other properties. The first one of these that players saw was with horror icons such as Nightmare on Elm Street series' Freddy Krueger and Pyramid Head from Silent Hill.

However, this has now expanded to include less-expected properties such as Dungeons & Dragons, Hollywood, and now Tomb Raider. In Dead by Daylight's lore, both Killers and Survivors are pulled into a dark realm that is ruled over by the extraplanar god known as the Entity.

Now, it seems that Lara's various adventures and expeditions in her own franchise are enough to get the Entity's attention. She will be coming to Dead by Daylight by herself, alone with no map or associated Killer, which is what also happened to her colleague Alan Wake, according to Polygon.

Similar to other Survivors in Dead by Daylight, Lara will have three perks that should affect her gameplay. The first is Finesse which activates when you are healthy and makes your fast vaults 20% faster. The second is Hardened which activates after you unlock a chest and cleanse or bless a totem.

It will reveal the Killer's aura for a few seconds anytime you scream. The last is Specialist, which will give you one token each time up to a maximum of three. Also, after you do a great skill check on a generator, you consume all tokens.

For each token that was consumed doing this, you reduce the maximum required generator progress. Lara's arrival comes as Dead by Daylight has been moving away from solely using horror characters for its roster of Killers and Survivors.

A Range of Survival Skills

Developer Behaviour Interactive confirmed in a press release that Lara will become playable for Dead by Daylight players starting on July 16, 2024.

But for those who are too eager and want to get their hands on the Tomb Raider star now, they can do so via the time-limited public test build that is available on Steam, said IGN.

The developer said that with Lara's experiences and skillset, she perfectly embodies the characteristics that are needed in order to survive in The Fog. The studio added that the character fits right at home in the world of Dead by Daylight alongside other iconic characters.

However, Behaviour Interactive said that while Lara may be well-prepared for the Trials ahead, in the Entity's twisted world, the future is something that is never promised. The developer also said that each of Lara's perks represents her "unwavering tenacity, a wealth of survival expertise, and bravery.

Lara's addition to Dead by Daylight makes some sense as the Tomb Raider protagonist has previously come face to face with horror.

But while she has survived a magic island filled with mercenaries, she will soon have to contend with supernatural toys, aliens from the far future, and Skull Merchant, according to PCGamesN.
