Dustborn Preview: Narrative-Driven Game Pits You Against Fascist Groups in a Dystopian America

Dustborn is an upcoming narrative-driven action-adventure game that puts players in a dystopian America where they will have to face off against fascist groups while going on a road trip.

The group that you will take control of in the game are friends, lovers, and found family who are journeying in an alternate-history version of the region.

You will have to remain undercover as a punk band on tour in order to fight against fascist cops and smash corporate drones while also navigating new and evolving relationships.

Dustborn is set to release on Aug. 20, 2024, and will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC and was developed by Norwegian Studio Red Thread Game. It is their first foray into the action-adventure genre.

The game is also considered a strong departure in both tone and genre from their previous game, mystery adventure Draugen, which was released in 2019, and their debut title, Dreamfall Chapters, released in 2017.

The latter was also a sequel to The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. However, Dustborn impresses as a strong contender in combat games as while each component of its system is simple, they are stylish and woven together with such character and flare, according to PCGamer.

The game is covered in retro-turned-sci-fi propaganda that reminds some players of Fallout's post-apocalypse. However, Dustborn's environment is a result of a police state and evil tech companies that are satisfying their own greed.

Dustborn also features cel-shaded comic book art and neon punk wardrobes that do not take away from the game's deep storyline. One of the characters is Pax, a 30-something Black woman who has tattoos all over her body.

She is the fulcrum of the group and she is joined by her artist best friend, Sai, on-again off-again fling Noam, and long-lost sister Ziggy. Theo, who is a dad-like figure, is the one who is heading up the smuggling operation part while a sentient robot is the driver and cook of the group.

A Dystopian, Alternate-History America

Pax is looking to create a new life in Dustborn after she was hired to transport an important package to Nova Scotia. This is something that she will have to keep safe with the help of her crew, each having distinct abilities, said WCCFTech.

The preview of the game also showcased how its character development and interactions will be among Dustborn's most developed features.

When players control Pax, they will find that they have a lot of opportunities to interact with other characters, develop their relationships with them, and get to know them better.

Whenever you are not interacting with other characters, you can explore a variety of closed-off, linear locations. The view is from a third-person perspective and features Pax searching for clues and objects to help her solve whatever problem she and her crew encounter.

But in the beginning of the preview, you and your crew members are abandoned at a gas station and you will have to find a way to get out of there. You need to be cautious because even now, there are enemies such as a biker gang that can threaten your safety, according to GodisaGeek.
