Stardew Valley Mod Makes 'Hardcore Mode' a Reality, Deletes Save if You Use Wiki

A new Stardew Valley mod has brought the joke of a "Hardcore Mode" into reality and will delete players' save files if they open up the game's wiki.

This new mod comes especially tailored to some players who may be thinking that the cutesy and idyllic farming fantasy world of Stardew Valley was a tad bit too easy. The new Hardcode Mode changes nothing in the game and will only delete your farm if you use the most useful community resource in the game.

Software engineer Sylvie Nightshade is the one behind the new mod which was created on June 21, 2024. She was apparently inspired by an article that she saw on Hard Drive that was posted only a few hours earlier on the same day.

She announced the mod on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying that she made the mod for real. The mod will delete any Stardew Valley save you have if you dare to open up the game's wiki at any point, according to Kotaku.

This is what makes the Hardcore Mode a much more challenging version of Stardew Valley because of just how important the wiki has become for most people.

It is a repository of knowledge about all kinds of information about the game, including when plans bloom, how much they sell for, villagers' preferences, and many more.

Some players may be wondering how the new mod actually pulls off the act of deleting your Stardew Valley save file when you open the wiki. Nightshade explains on the mod's GitHub page that this is done by scanning the title of every window that is currently open on a user's computer.

This checks whether or not "Stardew Valley Wiki" is in the title of any of the pages that are open and if it is, the mod proceeds to erase your saved files. While this may seem like a pretty brutal mode to play on, it is also very fun for some players out there who want a more challenging playthrough.

A Brutal Gameplay Feature

On top of deleting players' Stardew Valley save files if they open the game's wiki, it also closes the browser window that it finds the wiki. Nightshade also said that she created the mod after she taught herself how to create SMAPI mods "in two hours" just to make this particular one, said GamesRadar.

The addition of a Hardcore Mode to Stardew Valley comes in contrast to the game's relatively cozy aesthetic and feel. In the game, players control a character whose grandfather had passed away and left them with a dilapidated farm as part of their inheritance.

The main objective of the game is that players will have to build the farm from the ground up and even add a personal touch to the land. Stardew Valley follows a non-linear gameplay unlike something like Harvest Moon and allows you to explore however you want.

You will be able to grow crops, cook food, mine ores, breed livestock, and do just about anything else that you could expect from a farming simulator title, according to GameRant.
