Beyond Good and Evil 2: Ubisoft Confirms Sequel is Still in Development

Shortly after announcing Beyond Good and Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition, Ubisoft confirmed that the sequel, Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in development and will be coming in the future.

The confirmation of the sequel still in the works was made as part of a more comprehensive announcement. In it, the studio also clarified some details regarding the upcoming remaster of the original game.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was originally teased back in 2008 and fans had to wait nine years for a cinematic reveal, which was showcased at E3 2017. Despite some developers of the sequel expecting the game to be canceled, Ubisoft Montpellier has kept up with the project over the years.

That particular endeavor was stifled by another roadblock in July 2023 when creative director Emile Morel passed away suddenly at only 40 years of age.

But on June 24, 2024, Ubisoft took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to reaffirm to fans that Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains in development, according to GameRant.

While the video game studio did not provide much detail regarding the sequel of the cult classic from 2003, the confirmation was enough to hype up fans of the series. The post of the confirmation itself has been viewed more than 140,000 times in just 90 minutes of going online.

Ubisoft specifically noted that the upcoming re-release of the original game will become available for purchase on Steam on the day of launch. This ends the long-running tradition of Ubisoft games skipping Valve's gaming platform on release day.

This also alleviates some concerns among fans of the franchise that stem from the studio's recent decision to delist Beyond Good and Evil from Steam.

Additionally, while Ubisoft has not yet given any indication that it plans to revert that particular decision, it has reassured fans of the series that the original game will be available via Ubisoft+, Ubisoft Store, and GOG.

Remaster of the Original Game

The announcement comes as many fans of the franchise were questioning the state of Beyond Good and Evil 2 when Ubisoft announced Beyond Good and Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition. The sequel has spent years in development limbo, getting many restarts and management changes, said Insider Gaming.

The development comes as Beyond Good and Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition is coming out on June 25, 2024.

The confirmation of the sequel being in development also comes after the studio commented on it back in January last year. At the time, Ubisoft confirmed that it would not be part of a wave of game cancellations.

The title became the longest-delayed game in history in 2022, overtaking Duke Nukem Forever. One thing to note is that the latter actually did get releases, which means the award is not necessarily a death stamp.

The remaster of the original game will be available on launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It would come with added features from the base title, such as 60 FPS performance and new cosmetics, according to TheGamer.
