Beyond Good & Evil is Officially Getting a 4K Remaster Launching Next Week

It's finally official, Beyond Good & Evil is getting a 4K remaster that is scheduled to launch on June 25, 2024, in celebration of the franchise's 20th anniversary.

The remaster was announced by Ubisoft on Thursday during a Limited Run Games showcase and it noted that the upcoming game will bring updated graphics, controls, and audio. It will also reportedly feature improved performance, with the studio noting "up to 4K, 60 fps."

Ubisoft also noted that Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition will have quality-of-life improvements that include autosaves, cutscene skipping, controller and keyboard-and-mouse support, and cross-save across all platforms.

Some of the new stuff added from the base game is a speedrun mode, more than 20 new achievements and trophies, and a gallery. The latter in particular delves into the original title's development with never-before-seen artwork and videos.

The re-release comes as not much of a surprise for many longtime fans of the series as the game's existence had previously leaked last fall. The original title was released in 2003 on GameCube, PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox, according to Polygon.

The story is set more than 400 years into the future and follows photojournalist Jade as she attempts to expose an alien conspiracy. Despite Beyond Good & Evil being a commercial miss during its time, it became a cult classic in the years after.

Ubisoft announced in 2017 that a prequel, titled Beyond Good & Evil 2, was being worked on but the publisher has not mentioned much about it in recent times. The last time that fans were given an update regarding the prequel was in 2021 when the studio said it was still being worked on.

The remaster will soon be available digitally on June 25, 2024, and will launch on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. There will also be a physical version and a collector's edition that can be bought.

Remaking the Original With New Features

In the trailer announcing Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition, Ubisoft also mentioned a "reorchestrated soundtrack."

Earlier this month, the game's trophies also leaked and the studio supposedly delisted the original game from Steam, which sparked the original rumors of a remaster, said The Verge.

The 4K remaster will also be available as a day-one inclusion with a Ubisoft+ Premium subscription. In the game, Jade is accompanied by her adoptive uncle Pey'j as they explore Hillys, a water planet under constant threat from the DomZ aliens.

The game initially looks to use Jade's photography skills to document local wildlife in order to earn enough money to pay the bills. But the two quickly get mixed with a clandestine news network that is working to expose the truth behind the DomZ attacks.

The original Beyond Good & Evil incorporated a mixture of gameplay mechanics from a variety of different genres.

The game lets you knock aliens around with Jade's dai-jo staff in fluid combat encounters, sneak past lethal guards in tense stealth sequences, and pilot a hovercraft to fight off creatures and win explosive races, according to Ubisoft News.
