Closure Announced on Social Media
Pieces Interactive announced its closure on X, sharing an image featuring the studio's logo and the message, "Pieces Interactive: 2007-2024. Thanks for playing with us." This farewell note was also posted on the studio's website, accompanied by a brief history of the company.
The studio, founded in 2007, was acquired by Embracer Group in 2017. They were known for working on expansions for Titan Quest, including Titan Quest: Ragnarök and Titan Quest: Atlantis. Their final project was the reboot of the 1992 classic Alone in the Dark, which aimed to bring new life to the beloved horror game.
Underwhelming Sales and Financial Strain
Despite positive reviews, with some calling the reboot "an intelligent reimagining," the game did not meet sales expectations. Embracer Group's financial report for 2023-24 stated that the sales of Alone in the Dark were "softer than expected" and "performed below management expectations."
THQ Nordic, a division of Embracer Group, confirmed the closure of Pieces Interactive but declined to provide further comments.
The closure of Pieces Interactive is part of a broader trend in the gaming industry. Just three days prior, Galvanic Games also announced its shutdown due to poor sales of Wizard with a Gun. June has been a tough month for the industry, with layoffs and closures at other studios such as Behaviour Interactive, Sumo Group, and Avalanche.
