Fear The Spotlight starts like many classic horror stories. Vivian, a nerdy and well-behaved teenager, and her goth friend Amy sneak into their school after hours to perform a séance. The school has a creepy past due to a fire that killed several students years ago. While it's a bit morbid, it's typical teenage behavior to try to contact the spirits of these students in the school library.
The game's story feels realistic and relatable. Many players might recognize the dynamic between Vivian and Amy, where a goth kid befriends a nerd, and they get into trouble together. The game combines a 1990s teen horror plot with a 1990s survival-horror aesthetic. The visuals, inspired by early 3D games on the original PlayStation, create an eerie, surreal atmosphere perfect for a ghost story.

Gameplay Focuses on Puzzles and Atmosphere
Developed by Cozy Game Pals, a husband-and-wife team, Fear The Spotlight was originally released in 2023. Now, with additional content and backing from Blumhouse Games, it is set for re-release in Fall 2024. The game emphasizes stealth and puzzle-solving over traditional survival mechanics.
In a demo played at Summer Game Fest 2024, Vivian and Amy navigate through their school, avoiding detection by surveillance cameras and solving puzzles. The game shifts from a third-person perspective to a first-person view during interactive moments. Players guide a cursor to interact with objects, solving puzzles to progress the story.
These interactive moments also offer insights into the characters and the setting. For example, Vivian retrieves a keycard from the information desk, revealing her to be one of the library's top student volunteers. These details enrich the narrative and deepen the player's connection to the characters.
A Haunting Experience Without Jump Scares
The demo builds tension as Vivian and Amy start their séance in the library. When the candles are lit, and the séance begins, a dark figure appears, and Amy disappears. Vivian must navigate the now-changed and eerie library, lit only by a single candle. The library seems to expand and shift unnaturally, enhancing the game's spooky atmosphere.
As Vivian searches for Amy, the game maintains an unsettling ambiance without relying on jump scares. Instead, it uses the graphical style and art direction to create a sense of dread and mystery. This approach makes Fear The Spotlight unique among horror games, focusing on atmospheric scares rather than sudden shocks.
Fear The Spotlight will re-release with one to two hours of new content in 2024. It will be available on PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox 360.
