Life is Strange: Double Exposure Showcases Extended Gameplay, Answers Fans' Questions

Deck Nine Games revealed extended gameplay footage of Life is Strange: Double Exposure during the Summer Game Fest last week that basically answered many fans' questions by confirming that it will respect both of the original game's endings.

The developer is bringing back the original franchise protagonist Max Caulfield in the latest entry in the series. The June 13, 2024, reveal lifestream concluded with 18 minutes of gameplay footage that was enlightening for players.

On top of answering many questions that fans may have had in their head, the reveal also reassured anyone who was worried about the main character being less of an absolute dork this time around.

At the Summer Game Fest, one of the key points that was brought up was that Life is Strange: Double Exposure pays tribute to both endings of the original game.

Spoilers alert that the original story ended with Max choosing to either save her friend or potential girlfriend Chloe or the town of Arcadia Bay, according to Kotaku.

These are two very different outcomes and it looks like Deck Nine Games doesn't want to make a choice about which is actually canon in the sequel. It was revealed that at some point in the new game, players will be able to talk with Max's friend Safi about her past.

At that time, they will also define their relationship with Chloe and whether or not they chose to save her previously. For now, it is unclear how, if at all, this would affect the story of Life is Strange: Double Exposure.

In the sequel, players will see Max, who is now in college, where her life is seemingly distanced from her time back in Arcadia Bay. Fans also got a glimpse of what looked to be an early segment of the game's first episode.

Respecting the Original Game's Endings

Despite Max choosing not to use her powers of rewinding time anymore, it seems like her abilities have actually evolved. She is now capable of traveling between two timelines, which the game calls the power "Shift," said GameInformer.

The story turns tragic as Max soon discovers alongside her newfound powers about the sudden murder of her new friend, Safi. The developer described the latest game in the franchise as a supernatural murder mystery.

You will help Max travel across two realities, which are her present one and an alternate timeline where Safi is still alive but her life is in danger. In that other reality, you have to figure out who the killer is and in the original timeline, prevent the dastard crime.

Narrative director Felice Kuan said that by bringing back Max's story they knew it had to be something special. He added that they wanted to respect the two unforgettable endings of the first chapter of the character's story.

This is also alongside crafting something new and fresh that echoes Max's past challenges even though it moves the character's personal story forward. Game director Jon Stauder said that it was important to make another adventure for the protagonist while respecting both endings, according to Eurogamer.
