Capcom's Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess Aims To Carve Out Its Own Genre

Capcom's newest upcoming game, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, is seemingly trying to carve out its own genre and leave a mark in the video game industry.

One of the highlights of the recent Summer Game Fest is Capcom's new title that looks like it ignores the meta game design trends of this year and brings a nostalgic feeling from the era of the PlayStation 2.

In just a few seconds of its trailer, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess shows what it really is with its lush painterly graphics that take heavy inspiration from Japanese art.

The game is essentially a tower defense but the core feature is that you need to defend a woman who is ceremonially dancing her way across a corrupted landscape.

As she moves forward, she purges the land of its defilement with her stunning dance. Additionally, your towers are villagers who were freed from the spiritual malaise and were given defensive roles to fulfill, according to PCGamer.

These villagers include an axeman who will valiantly face off directly against the yokai that are pouring out of the corrupted Torii gates. Another one is a shaman who is capable of freezing enemies every few seconds.

As Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is a game by Capcom, you will be able to run around with a katana in hand to slice yokai into pieces much faster than the villagers. The game also establishes its loop very quickly.

During the daytime, players can run around a compact stage that has relatively few paths that then branch off the central road. You will have to look for corrupted growths in order to purge them by slashing or holding a button for a few seconds.

The world of Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is an ancient, psychedelic dreamscape that is filled with magic and otherworldly horrors. It is also mechanically dense and features moments of slow strategizing and rapid-fire hack-and-slash combat, said Engadget.

The entirety of the action in the game will take place in various camps along the mountainside that are set under green canopies and dense foliage. The defilements can be seen creating plants with glowing pink orbs and covering some areas in an iridescent black goo.

This particular substance traps villagers in putrid sacks and also infects the local deer population. The woman that you will have to protect is known as Maiden Yoshiro who is being targeted by the Seethe. These are monsters that spawn out of the defilement during the night cycle.

Yoshiro is the key to cleansing the mountainside but due to her ritual, she is left vulnerable to the corrupted creatures. During the daytime, you can assign an attack role to the villagers that you have freed and also place them in the environment wherever you want.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess will be released on Xbox Game Pass on July 19, 2024, alongside a number of other titles that month. The game was first unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2023. It was then confirmed to be a day one Xbox Game Pass release, according to GameRant.
