New Gears of War Game: Everything We Know So Far About the Prequel

The newly announced Gears of War game during the Xbox Games Showcase is a prequel that will tell the story of Marcus Fenix.

The latest game in the franchise is known as Gears of War: E-Day and will be coming to Xbox consoles as well as PC sometime in the future. The reveal of the latest Gears of War game is good news for fans who have been looking forward to a new entry in the series.

And while the latest game will actually bring players into the past, the cinematic trailer showed off a young Marcus who was struggling against a single Locust. This is not something that he is usually seen doing in the later games but it is due to him being a greener, less experienced person.

In the end, Marcus overcomes his dire situation thanks to his best friend Dom Santiago and the two then look out into the distance. They see all hell breaking loose during Emergency Day, which is the time when the Locusts emerged from beneath the planet and went to war with humanity, according to GameSpot.

The studio also said that E-Day has long been considered to be "the heart of the Gears universe," which is why they decided to look to the past in building for the future. Gears of War: E-Day takes place 14 years before the original story.

This means that some of the weapons will call back to the lore's earlier versions, such as a Lancer that does not yet have the iconic chainsaw and is instead equipped with a bayonet.

However, the latest game is said to be a "story of many origins," which suggests that players can see the birth of the chainsawed Lancer during the campaign mode.

Gears of War: E-Day also harkens back to the olden days by featuring a small nod to Gary Jules' Mad World cover. This is a song that has been linked to Gears of War ever since a memorable trailer that featured it more than a decade ago.

Telling the Story of Emergence Day

In a blog post after the announcement of Gears of War: E-Day, Xbox revealed more information about the latest game in the franchise. It described E-Day as "an origin story that depicts the horror of Locust invasion on Emergency Day through the eyes of Marcus Fenix," said IGN.

Creative director Matt Searcy also wrote that the new title will feel like a new Gears of War game because that is exactly what it is. He added that it is the studio revisiting the tone and the feeling of what makes the franchise great. They are also tapping into new techniques, new processes, and new technology.

The studio technical director at The Coalition, Kate Rayner, also claimed that the new game will offer an "unrivaled visual experience" for fans of the franchise. She added that the advancements in Unreal Engine 5 and the leap in technical capabilities are "tremendous."

Rayner noted that this includes more than 100 times more environment and character details compared to Gears 5. Some of these are hardware raytraced lighting, reflections, and shadows, next-generation destruction and gore, and cutting-edge animation technology, according to the Video Games Chronicle.
