Summer Game Fest: Civilization 7 Announced With Debut Trailer, Will Have Console Release

Summer Game Fest just announced that Civilization VII is coming and showed off a debut trailer that showed fans of the franchise what they can expect in the latest entry in the series.

The official confirmation for the game comes with a leak ahead of the event where players already knew that 2K was planning on announcing something major during the Summer Game Fest. It was thanks to an apparent mistake on the publisher's website that gave away information about Civilization VII.

The latest cinematic trailer included recreations of different eras of civilization but did not show off any gameplay. That particular part of the game will be shown to fans later this August but whatever it looks like, it will become available on PC and consoles next year.

The early revelation of the game was when fans noticed that a banner for the next game in the strategy game series showed up on 2K's website. The image was immediately taken down but Reddit users were able to preserve a screenshot, according to Kotaku.

The Civilization franchise debuted with Sid Meier's Civilization in 1991 and brought a mix of depth and accessibility. Throughout the years, the series has remained immensely successful and popular among players.

Now, almost eight years after the last entry in the game, Civilization VII is coming to revitalize the series after some people called Civilization VI the weakest game in the franchise. As the two games have nearly a decade of difference, it could mean a lot of changes and fixes

Longtime Civilization developer Firaxis Games revealed that it was already working on the next iteration of the franchise last year. However, it did not explicitly call it Civilization VII at the time, said The Verge.

The announcement of the latest game in the franchise comes as there are some heavy contenders in the genre fighting for attention with Civilization VI, including Old World and Stellaris.

Coming in 2025 to PC and Consoles

The first time that players were given a suggestion to Civilization VII was back in February last year when Heather Hazen was appointed as the new Firaxis studio head. A press release at the time covered the news.

In it, Hazen said that she was thrilled to have the opportunity to carry on the studio's storied legacy. This began with the announcement that Firaxis was already working on the development of the next iteration of the Civilization series, according to PCGamesN.

Sid Meier, the founder and director of creative development at Firaxis Games, said that for more than three decades, players worldwide shared their love and support for the franchise. He added that he was incredibly excited for them to see the latest game in the series.

Meier said that Civilization VII is a title that represents the culmination of three decades worth of strategy innovation and refinement.

The president of 2K Games, David Ismailer, noted that the franchise has sold more than 70 million copies and has accumulated more than 1 billion hours played so far across all players.
