Hello Games' No Man's Sky just received a major update that added the new Adrift mode that lets players explore an abandoned universe all alone without any other life forms present.
This particular addition will have players experiencing the long-running space exploration title in an alternate universe. In this new area, you can truly be alone for the first time ever as there are no NPCs, which means that there will be no shops, no trading, no shortcuts, and no help.
No Man's Sky's New Adrift Mode
The change also makes it a much more dangerous survival experience and Hello Games noted that there will be sandworms roaming free and fiend eggs spreading across planets. The buildings are also left broken and rusted and the worlds are littered with graves of lost travelers.
The developer also teased by saying that the new mode is set in a space where a new ghostly frigate beckons for those who wish to unravel the mystery at the heart of the new universe. There is also the new bulky dropship, known as the Iron Vulture, that becomes available to help players, according to IGN.
Hello Games added that the new Adrift mode was originally planned to be their next expedition but suddenly ballooned into an update filled with various improvements, new unique gameplay content, and rewards.

No Man's Sky originally launched in 2016 and was initially available only on PC and PlayStation 4 but was also released for Xbox One in 2018 and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2020. In 2022, the game was also made available for the Nintendo Switch.
In the past few years, the developer has released a long list of major updates for its game, the most recent of which was launched on May 27, 2024, and was known as Orbital. Hello Games noted that it has "a lot planned and still to announce."
A Lonely Space Travel
One thing that is worth noting in the latest update is that the developer has finally added a ship editor to the game, which was something that many players have wanted for quite some time now, said The Verge.
On top of the Iron Vulture, the Adrift mode also introduces a new "ghostly new frigate class" that seems to be a heavily damaged starship that you can add to your fleet. This means you will have at least something to travel with you in the vastness of this lonely space.
In a press release, the developer said that while everyone will awaken on the desolate and worm-infested planet Lapezuk, they will not be together in "the usual sense."
Hello Games noted that the boundaries between realities have thickened, adding that communication is consumed by static and the formerly bustling Space Anomaly has become eerily quiet.
The new Adrift mode seems to be a nod to No Man's Sky's early days as some time after the game's launch, much of the promised multiplayer elements were lacking. Many players at the time considered the game to be a more lonely adventure than what Hello Games advertised, according to GamesRadar.
