Single Developer Faces the Challenge
Jannick Leismann shared the update on the Slay Together Steam page, stating that the project would no longer continue. The announcement, titled "Further Plan", started with an acknowledgment of the sporadic updates that had characterized the game's development.
"To keep it short, I have decided to cancel the project because I am unable to finish it. It has been a fun ride, and I have spent thousands of hours developing the game with your feedback. However, as many of you know, I am a single independent developer with limited time," the announcement read.
Despite the challenges, Leismann's efforts to create a playable game that remained in Early Access for about five years were notable. The fact that he managed to keep the game running and updated with feedback from players highlights his dedication and love for the genre.
Future Plans and Server Maintenance
With the end of development, Slay Together will be taken down from the Steam store. However, players who already have the game in their library will still be able to access it as long as the servers are up. Leismann plans to keep the servers running for at least a year, though the exact duration is yet to be determined.
Reflecting on his experience, Leismann acknowledged the challenges of developing an MMORPG alone. "I underestimated the amount of work required to complete this project. Now, it's time for me to move on in my journey as a game developer, with a project that I can realistically complete," he said, hinting at future endeavors that will be more manageable.
