New Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree Trailer Focuses on Messmer the Impaler

FromSoftware just released a new trailer for Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion that focuses on telling the story of the menacing Messmer the Impaler.

The latest footage comes as the soulslike game's first and last DLC is coming in less than a month. The video is all about narrative and does not feature any gameplay but provides some much-needed background on the mysterious Miquella, who is Malenia's twin brother.

The trailer starts off by showing players how Miquella's attempts to create a Haligtree in an effort to combat his sister's Scarlet Rot and his inability to age past childhood ultimately brought him face to face with Messmer the Impaler and the "tyranny of [his] flame."

Those who watch the video will see massive fires engulfing the Lands between as bodies littered the steps leading up to a castle. They also see Messmer himself wielding a glowing red flame, according to Kotaku.

The trailer also begins by saying that Miquella the kind spoke of the beginning, adding "The seduction, and the betrayal." Then, Miquella can be seen walking barefoot across a blood-red ground while wielding a golden, glowing arc. This apparently seems to be his creation of the tree.

The footage continues and says, "What followed was a war" and Messmer the Impaler along with his terrifying giant torch monsters can be seen purging the people of the Lands Between.

While the trailer doesn't necessarily say it, it is highly likely that all of Miquella and Malenia's followers were driven away from the realm.

One part of the trailer also speaks to "kindly" Miquella being forced to "abandon everything." This could be referencing his encasement in the cocoon found at the base of the Haligtree as well as his trip to the Land of Shadow.

The official blurb of the latest trailer writes that the shadow of the story can now be told and players will be able to learn about the mysterious history of the Realm of Shadows. Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion will be coming out on June 21, 2024, said IGN.

Releasing Teasers for the Expansion

The trailer also comes after fans of Elden Ring were already treated to two surprises by FromSoftware when the developer revealed two new images recently. These came ahead of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and showcased two of the new enemies in the DLC.

Additionally, FromSoftare producer Yasuhiro Kitao recently shared a teaser art that looks similar to the world of Bloodborne. This was the latest post from the producer since his tweet on Feb. 21, 2024, when he thanked the Elden Ring community for waiting patiently for the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

His latest post is an environmental shot that many players said could definitely pass as being straight from Bloodborne's Yharnam. The main thing that shows the photo is for Elden Ring is the spiral of Grace lights found in the background.

Despite his post, Kitao did not add any caption to his post which left fans in discussions and had them speculating of where the new area could be or what importance it could play in the overall lore, according to GamesRadar.
