Fan-Made Super Mario 64 Mod Lets You Create, Share Your Own Levels

Following the end of support for Super Mario Maker, a new fan-made Super Mario 64 mod is letting players create and share their own levels with other people in the community online.

The new mod comes as Super Mario Maker, which was released in 2015, and its sequel which was released in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, are highly popular games. These two titles let any player make and share their 2D Mario levels to let other people try and beat them.

However, since the release of Super Mario Maker 2, many fans of the franchise have wanted Nintendo to release a third game. While that may not be happening anytime soon, one fan, modder Rovertronic, released Mario Builder 64 on May 19, 2024.

This is a brand-new mod for the original Super Mario 64 game that lets players build their own levels using easy-to-use menus and controls. A video shared by the creator showcases the mod in action and looks as good as something that was officially made by Nintendo, according to Kotaku.

However, setting up Mario Builder 64 is not that easy but fortunately, there is a full guide on how to install it that will guide you throughout the process available here. Another that you would need if you want to play this new mod is an emulator to play the levels as well as your own SM64 rom.

The fan-made mod does not include the original game, which was something that was done deliberately in order to avoid potential legal consequences from Nintendo. After players get the mod up and running, it can be seen as an intuitive and impressively well-made game.

Rovertronic first revealed the Super Mario 64 mod on social media and was said to let gamers "create the 3D hot garbage of your dreams."

The potential that the new mod brings is massive as it is still unclear how fans can utilize it to the fullest. However, it is already clear that these levels will be both distinct and frustrating, to say the least.

One example of these levels is the Fearsome Floating Fortress which requires players to control Mario to navigate from platform to platform with increasing precision. These types of levels force you to think outside the box in order to find ingenious ways to beat them.

Closure of Servers for Super Mario Maker

The new mod also comes after a goal was set ahead of the closure of servers for Super Mario Maker where a group of players wanted to beat all existing player-made levels. The group, who are known as Team 0%, has been going at it for several years, said MyNintendoNews.

When Nintendo announced the closure of the Wii U's online services, there were still roughly 26,000 levels that had not been beaten. With only four months left, they banded together to work on every single one and put up a website that let the community know which levels were left.

One way that games are constantly being erased is by the shuttering of company-hosted servers. A majority of Super Mario Maker is now officially unplayable nine years after it was initially released, according to The Verge.
