Tesla Removes Steam Games from Vehicles Due to Hardware Limitations

Less than 18 months after its introduction, Tesla is reportedly pulling Steam support from its vehicles. This move affects the company's S and X models, which previously allowed users to play popular games through a native beta Steam app.

Initial Launch and Features

In December 2022, Tesla announced that games like Cuphead, Sonic, and Cyberpunk 2077 could be played on the S and X models using a Steam app. This feature was part of a broader push to enhance in-car entertainment, allowing users to enjoy high-quality gaming while their vehicles were parked or charging.

Reversal of Decision

According to Electrek, Tesla is now reversing this decision. In a statement sent to customers awaiting delivery of new S and X models, Tesla said, "Tesla is updating the gaming computer in your Model X, and your vehicle is no longer capable of playing Steam games." The company reassured customers that "all other entertainment and app functionalities are unaffected."

The exact reasons for dropping Steam support remain unclear. However, it is believed that existing Tesla owners who already have the Steam app installed will not be affected by this change.

Tesla had previously faced scrutiny from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2021 over its Passenger Play feature, which allowed gaming while the car was in motion. In response, Tesla restricted Steam's functionality, ensuring it could only be used when the car was parked or charging.
