Fallout 76 Attracts Record Number of Players 6 Years After Release Thanks to Series' Success

Fallout 76 has attracted a record number of players six years after its initial release thanks to the smashing success of the TV series based on the franchise.

The 2018 game has reached more than a million players in a single day as revealed by the series' official X account. If Steam is used as a sole metric, Fallout 76 reached its all-time player peak on Sunday with 73,368 concurrent users.

While the game was originally released six years ago, it was exclusive to the Bethesda launcher ahead of its later Steam release in May 2020. At the time, its peak concurrent players hit a comparatively modest 32,982 users.

Despite seeing record numbers, those figures still pale in comparison to Fallout 4's Steam statistics, which hit a 24-hour peak of 160,000 players on Tuesday. The game's all-time high was recorded at 472,962 and was seen in November 2015, which was its launch, according to PCGamer.

This is not very surprising as successful TV adaptations of highly popular video games typically make the franchise popular again. However, it is much more important for Fallout 76 as it is a live service game that heavily relies on a healthy returning audience.

Fortunately for players who are eager to play Fallout 76 after watching the Fallout series on Prime Video, Amazon has a great offer. The company has partnered with Bethesda Softworks and Microsoft to give away free copies of the game for Xbox Series X/S and PC.

The only catch for this is that you would have to be an Amazon Prime member to be able to claim a free copy of the title via Prime Gaming. The deadline for those who are interested in this offer is May 24, which is when it will expire and become unavailable, said Variety.

Various social media platforms have also been filled with reports of people who have finished watching the Fallout TV series and have jumped straight into one of the games in the franchise.

Success of the TV Series

Bethesda did not let the chance slip pass as it already announced a release date for the next-gen update for Fallout 4. However, this has had consequences for the equally anticipated DLC-sized mod, Fallout London.

Fallout 4 is the top-selling video game on Steam by revenue and comes out ahead of heavy contenders Counter-Strike 2 and Helldivers 2. The title's Game of the Year Edition is at fourth place and Fallout 76 is at fifth.

The interconnection of the Fallout TV series' success and the games' returning audience comes as Valve makes player concurrents public. However, equivalent figures for games that are on console and PC are not available.

On the other hand, there has been information that Bethesda has been working on Fallout 5 in its long-term schedule.

However, many fans are not expecting to see that title out in the spotlight for several more years. This is given as The Elder Scrolls 6 is what will be next after Starfield, which is not due until at least 2028, according to IGN.
