A remastered edition of The Last of Us is coming to PlayStation 4, and Naughty Dog is currently considering a discount for those who already own the game on PS3.
Despite coming out less than a year ago, Naughty Dog's critically acclaimed title is being remade on Sony's new hardware for players who didn't get to play it during the last generation and those who just want to experience it again. Because many PS3 owners invested in a full-priced copy of The Last of Us so recently, Sony and Naughty Dog are looking at their finances to see the viability of offering those players a discount on the PS4 version.
Answering a fan question on the EU PlayStation Blog about such a discount, Naughty Dog's Eric Monacelli said, "We're looking into the business model for all this and will post about this once we have input from all regions."
While this is far from confirmation of a discount for those who own the PS3 game, Monacelli certainly didn't dismiss the suggestion. Based on what he said, they are currently thinking about that (or some similar) model while looking at the numbers.
According to Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Remastered will run in 1080p and boast higher resolution character models, improved shadows and lighting, upgraded textures, and other improvements.
If they end up discounting the PS4 version for those who purchased the game on PS3, it would be a nice gesture of good faith to fans. People may want to take advantage of the upgraded version (essentially a better product than the one they paid for less than a year ago), but most probably wouldn't pay full price for it so soon after the original release. Naughty Dog is under no obligation to offer such a deal, but they understand how it could be frustrating for owners and we may hear something soon--keep an eye out for updates on this subject.
