Fallout Series Releases on Prime Video, Receives Fans' Thumbs Up

The highly anticipated Fallout TV series has just been released on Prime Video and is already in the running for one of the most well-received video game adaptations of all time as fans give their thumbs up.

The live-action show is based on Bethesda's iconic franchise and is helmed by Westworld's Jonathan Nolan, who is the brother of Oscar winner Christopher Nolan, and his wife Lisa Joy. The show is set 200 years after the events of a nuclear apocalypse devastated the majority of the world's civilization.

Many of the wealthy people worldwide were able to head to bunkers as the few, but not only, survivors. One of these is the series' protagonist, Lucy, played by Ella Purnell, who is an optimistic "vault dweller." She leaves the safe confines of her shelter and heads to the surface in an attempt to save her father, played by Kyle MacLachlan.

Lucy discovers a dangerous wasteland on the surface that has been warped by atomic fallout as she finds clashing factions and terrifying mutants while she tries to navigate the post-nuclear chaos, according to CNET.

The Fallout TV series comes as Amazon is hoping to fill in the gap left by another critically acclaimed video game adaptation, The Last of Us. The new show will have eight episodes that will all be released at the same time. It will stream globally in more than 240 countries and territories.

Eager fans who want to watch it will have to watch until Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2024, at 9:00 p.m. ET or 6:00 p.m. PT in the United States and Canada. Fallout is exclusively on Prime Video and fans can access the streaming service with a standalone subscription or via an Amazon Prime membership.

Fallout releasing to widely positive reviews is a rare feat for a video game adaptation, but one that is becoming more common recently. They are typically heavily criticized but the new show has received praise for creating an original narrative that is set in the Fallout universe.

Receiving Positive Reviews

The series is said to have successfully balanced a comedic and dramatic tone while also creating a fresh narrative set inside the universe of a video game. One critic, Austen Goslin, said that the show adapts Fallout's world and setting without directly trying to retell any of the stories from the game franchise, said Forbes.

Others also said that the Fallout series is "explosively entertaining" and was praised for not explicitly recreating the source material. This is what many said differentiated the new shot from other video game adaptations that have been released in the past few years.

Trying to make a TV show out of the Fallout franchise makes sense, as the video game is a weird, often extremely violent, sometimes satirical black comedy that feels just like another popular series, The Boys.

The new show consistently uses the darkness of its devastated landscape to make jokes, including a talking brain-in-a-jar and an organ-harvesting robot. The series also pays reference to the opening of Fallout 3 where the protagonist is forced to explore the surface, according to IGN.
