Besiege is Getting 'The Splintered Sea' Expansion 4 Years After Full Release

Besiege is getting a new expansion four years after its full release called The Splintered Sea that will bring the castle-smashing strategy game to the seas.

The game developed by Spiderling Studios is one of the first titles that came out in early access on Steam in 2015. The medieval physics simulation game spent five years in early access before releasing in full with its 1.0 update.

Since then, it has received few updates, including new blocks, but there has been no major addition after the full release. Despite the relative lack of updates, fans of the game still continue to support it as it has a 95% "Overwhelmingly Positive" score rating on Steam and recent reviews have come in at 96%.

The upcoming expansion is trying to shake up the venerable siege warfare simulator by transferring players to the open seas. The Splintered Sea will add a new ten-level campaign that players can go through that is all set at sea. It will also bring new blocks and a new archipelago sandbox, according to PCGamesN.

While many players will undoubtedly be excited about the new levels and new blocks, the main focus for players regarding The Splintered Sea expansion will be how the water simulation plays out in multiplayer and sandbox modes.

Besiege's new major update promises not only aquatic combat but also gives players the chance to conduct undersea exploration. This means that they have to adjust their builds in order to survive both a broadside on the surface and withstand the depths.

While the strategy game is already popular for allowing players to build weird, barely working colossal creations that stand tall on the battlefield as they wage war, traveling across the sea could potentially give them a chance to amp up the ante and create new and stranger designs made for the seas.

The Splintered Sea Update

The game's new update will be released on May 24 on Steam and the trailer for the expansion features a wooden shark showing off its strength against some now obsolescent flesh sharks, said Rock Paper Shotgun.

Besiege brought an odd sense of humor to the genre, such as how some players strapped a buzzsaw to a walking windmill and let it go on a rampage. The new expansion seems to be leaning into that strength of the title, as the trailer featured a flying machine that lifts a confused giant squid out of the water.

The footage also showed a bomber plane taking out a series of boats before immediately clipping one of its wings and diving into the seas alongside its victims. Furthermore, the possibility of players' creations sinking to their watery graves means that The Splintered Sea will be more slapstick than the base game.

Despite the game forcing players to fight others to test their creations, it has an impressive way of making even losing seem fun as you watch your mechanical monstrosities waddle their way through the battlefield only to stumble and fall while also crushing your opponent's creations in the process, according to Inverse.
