MechWarrior 5: Clans Goes Back to Roots, Brings New Focus on Narrative, Innovative RTS Mechanics

MechWarrior 5: Clans is going back to the franchise's roots and will be focusing on narrative and bringing innovative RTS gameplay to players and fans of the series.

The game offers multiplayer co-op of up to five players and the story picks up right where MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries left off in 2019. The new title casts players as Smoke Jaguar clan in the 31st century as there is an ongoing clan-based Mech warfare.

MechWarrior 5: Clans' New Features and Mechanics

Piranha Games is bringing MechWarrior 5: Clans to players that would feature a new focus to narrative with innovative RTS mechanics.

Players will have five teammates that they can control; Jayden, Liam, Mia, Nasir, and Ezra. They will hear the most from the team's star leader, Jayden. A star is a group of five Mechs in the BattleTech universe.

In the single-player campaign, you can either take direct control of your teammates at any given time or issue orders from either a quickly accessible radial menu or a battlefield map that can be pulled up at any time. All of these actions can be done in real-time and will not pause ongoing combat, according to IGN.

The new game naturally features all of the classic MechWarrior features, including jump jets, tons of different types of mechs, and a lot of weapon load-outs. The weaponry ranges from guns to missiles to lasers to Gauss cannons. Players can choose whether to choose reckless abandon or precision control when taking on enemy mechs.

In an early demo of the game, the controls, mouse, and keyboard input and output all seemed smooth as the game's developer, Piranha Games, promised to bring slick gamepad controls as well. The latter should be released to players who will be getting MechWarrior 5: Clans on Xbox or PlayStation 5.

Furthermore, the developer is trying to ship both the PC and console versions of the game simultaneously. Players can also opt for a first-person camera or be able to see their mech from a third-person view.

A Focus on a Narrative Campaign

MechWarrior 5: Clans' focus on a narrative campaign steers away from MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries' attention to PvP. The new game will be entirely a PvE co-op experience that can be easily played solo or with friends, said PCGamesN.

Players' objective in the new entry in the franchise is to create a tightly built, story-driven campaign that foregrounds the largely forgotten Clans, particularly the Smoke Jaguars. The group is a team of fresh cadets who are fighting on the Inner Sphere and the new title is MechWarrior at its most focused and narrative.

Fans will be happy to see that combat in MechWarrior 5: Clans feels as weighty and satisfying as ever before. The titular mechs in the game feel heavy, physical, and extremely formidable. Players can use them to traverse the landscape and fight against other mechs in a barren environment.

The CEO of Piranha Games, Russ Bullock, said that the decision to add gamepad support which for the first time ever, allows console users to truly play just as well compared to PC players. He cited the system of radial menus for squad commands and the optional, simplified, and more FPS-like control scheme, according to PCGamer.
