Discord's Ad Rollout Sparks Backlash

Recent layoffs in the tech industry have raised speculation about Discord's motives for seeking additional revenue streams. The Wall Street Journal's report on this matter suggests that the company may be exploring advertising as a means of bolstering its financial standing. However, this potential pivot has left many gamers feeling disillusioned.

Across various online forums, including Reddit, users have expressed their frustration and discontent with the prospect of ads infiltrating their Discord experience. Threats to abandon the platform altogether are rampant, with some users declaring their intentions to seek alternative communication channels for gaming.

Details of the Proposed Ad Rollout

According to the Wall Street Journal report, Discord's ad strategy revolves around "Sponsored quests," a concept reminiscent of in-game promotions seen in popular titles like Fortnite. These sponsored quests would involve users completing in-game tasks while their friends watch on Discord, with rewards offered by participating game developers.

Peter Sellis, Discord's senior vice president of product, shed light on the mechanics of these ads, stating that they would be targeted based on users' gameplay, age, and geographic location data. While Sellis mentioned the option to disable ads, it remains unclear whether this feature will be accessible to all users or exclusive to premium Nitro subscribers.
