Empire of the Ants is an upcoming real-time strategy game that puts players into the world of tiny creatures where they will have to explore and expand their insect kingdom to greater heights.
The game is based on the novels by Bernard Werber and lets players take control of an ordinary ant who is forced to navigate the insect hierarchy of an ant colony in the middle of the woods. They also need to try and understand just what is happening in the world above the ground level of insect-kind.
Expanding an Insect Kingdom
As the ant protagonist, players will eventually become the colony's most valuable assets primarily due to their ease of mobility and budding skills as a commander of the legion of ants. Players will help the Ant Queen expand the kingdom's population and the game will let players face off against rival colonies that are looking to take whatever they can pillage, according to IGN.
What's more interesting is that this would be the second outing for Empire of the Ants in a video game form. The original title came in 2000 but that particular one took more of a grand strategy approach. The upcoming title is a new attempt from developer Tower Five that mixes a narrative adventure game with ground-level strategy action.

A preview of the game showed the early missions of the story campaign that see the ant protagonist exploring the surrounding areas around the colony. While taking control of an ant inside a video game may sound rather bland, Empire of the Ants presents the endeavor by really leaning into the score of the world within.
Whenever the player is not ordering other insects around, they can freely explore the surrounding area and chat with fellow ants who are named by their birth numbers. They are given a wide berth in exploration, which is helped by a control scheme that allows the player's ant to do nearly anything within the confines of the game.
Exploring, Collecting, and Managing Resources
In another preview of the game, the player is tasked with overthrowing a collective of termites that have taken up residence close to the base colony. While other enemies can be encountered in the world, the termites are the ants' natural enemies, said PCGamesN.
Players can stand on top of the small dirt mound that is the center of the colony, allowing them to scroll through a radial menu by turning their character's body. There are numerous options to choose from, including the creation of more soldier ants, the evolution of warfighting abilities, and the building of additions to the new hive.
The challenge in a single-player campaign and in PvP is to balance securing and managing players' ant hills with commanding units on the front line. The game does not give the option of zooming out and scrolling around like other RTS games.
If they want to order their troops to attack a certain ant hill, they will have to point to it and they are unable to start building if they are far away from the base as they need to be standing on top of it first, according to PCGamer.
