The newly announced Civilization Beyond Earth sounds great, remixing a famous historical strategy franchise into a sci-fi adventure into space. The trailer didn't feature gameplay (though we did get screenshots), but it definitely built excitement for the upcoming title.
What's even better, though, is this fan-made trailer that replaces the audio and narration from the original with Europe's The Final Countdown. It's a funny idea in general, but it actually works better than anyone would have anticipated.
Key moments in the trailer correlate perfectly to the song without much effort ("we're leaving together!" as the ship blasts off into space), and it's pretty amusing. I would highlight all of the best parts, but that would only ruin seeing it for yourself--I recommend you just watch.
Civilization Beyond Earth is a spiritual successor to Firaxis' 1999 one-off title, Alpha Centauri. The sci-fi game took Civilization's mechanics and placed them on alien planets with futuristic technology. Beyond Earth will be doing the same, incorporating Alpha Centauri's concept into the more successful series.
I personally can't wait for more details and gameplay videos for Beyond Earth to arrive. Civilization is one of the first series I really played when I was younger, starting with Civlization II, and I've been playing every title since. Taking the franchise to space is just another great-sounding addition I'm open to--I have every faith that Firaxis will do it justice.
At any rate, the remade trailer below is quite funny, so watch and enjoy. Beyond Earth is due out some time this fall, with an exact date yet to be given.
