The Final Fantasy Rebirth Event for Apex Legends is now underway. Despite the amazing content that awaits players, the game's community is not all too pleased with Respawn Entertainment's egregious monetization tactics. What is the fuss all about? Well, it's about a special Death Box skin that costs a lot of money to obtain.
Egregious Monetization
For context, Death Boxes in Apex Legends are like treasure troves that players drop whenever they die. These contain all of the items that the dead players have collected during the course of a match.
That said, the recent Final Fantasy crossover event introduced a new "One-Winged-Angel" skin for Death Boxes. This is likely what players want to get their hands on, especially for those who are fans of Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII. However, players can only obtain this amazing skin if they are willing to spend at least $360. Why is that?
Apparently, the only way for players to acquire the Death Box skin is if they get all of the 36 cosmetic items on offer. These items are contained inside event packs, which cost $10 each.
Unsurprisingly, this does not sit well with the community. Some people have voiced their anger on X/Twitter. User MrDarthhenry said that players should boycott the game to show Respawn that this type of monetization scheme is not okay.
Another user opined that the community should draw the line. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that there are still some players who are going to fall for this, especially if companies nowadays exploit people's FOMO.
User AroostookG shared one possible reason why this event is so heavily monetized. They said that Respawn is doing this because the company was not able to meet its financial expectations. This is just a way for them to somehow make up for the "losses."

AI Art?
Aside from the outrageous monetization tactics, the Apex Legends community has accused Respawn of using AI in its ad campaign for the Final Fantasy Rebirth Event.
According to Rahil on X/Twitter, players can look at the recent trailer and see that the characters have bizarre issues, most notably their fingers.
Another user pointed out that the design for Aerith, one of the most prominent characters in Final Fantasy VII, just looks odd. They went on to say that most companies are using AI to eke out more work without paying a lot of money.
