Risk of Rain Returns is the remastered version of the iconic roguelike action platformer developed by Hopoo Games. In this title, players will come across items of different rarities, with red being the hardest to find.

With so many red items in the game, it might be confusing to know which ones are the best among the bunch. The good news is that this article provides you with information about the 7 best red items that you must use when playing Risk of Rain Returns.

Before anything, most of the items on this list can be acquired normally just by playing the game. However, since red items are quite rare, players may have to put more hours into obtaining them. With that out of the way, here are the seven best red items in Risk of Rain Returns:

Heaven Cracker

The first on the list is the "Heaven Cracker." This red item empowers your fourth basic attack in a row to pierce through enemies, dealing 100% damage in the process.

Because Risk of Rain Returns is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer, having the ability to pierce through enemies is definitely useful.

AtG Missile MK 2

If you already got your hands on the AtG Missile MK 1, the MK 2 variant is pretty much the same, albeit this thing can launch three missiles at a time.

What makes this overpowered is that it grants you the ability to trigger an "on-hit effect" where it launches another volley of three missiles, and then another, and then another, creating a chain of missiles that can destroy any foe on the screen.

Brilliant Behemoth

The Brilliant Behemoth is a red item that is befitting its name. It is "brilliant" because it basically empowers all of your attacks, causing them to explode on impact, dealing 20% of your total damage to nearby enemies.

If you've played Risk of Rain Returns, you know that you will be surrounded by hordes of enemies pretty much most of the time. The Brilliant Behemoth is just so amazing at clearing those packs of monsters that it is almost mandatory to bring with you when heading out.

Wicked Ring

The Wicked Ring is one of those items that provide you a with boost to your critical strike chance. Critical Strikes deal double damage, so you want to prop your critical strike chance numbers up if you want to eliminate enemies with ease.

That being said, unlike the Brilliant Behemoth which is already good by itself, the Wicked Ring works best when paired with other similar items, like the Lens Maker's Glasses, for example.

Fireman's Boots

Kiting is highly encouraged in Risk of Rain Returns, especially since it is an effective strategy when fighting against multiple groups of enemies. This involves hitting the enemies, running away a bit, then hitting them again, rinse and repeat.

The Fireman's Boots is quite useful in this scenario because it leaves a damaging trail of fire behind that deals 35% damage to those foolish enough to enter it.

Shattering Justice

Enemies get progressively harder to defeat as time goes by. You could be facing foes that have insanely high HP, armor, and damage numbers, so you must be equipped with the right items to deal with them.

One of those items is a must, particularly in the game. The red item in question is none other than the Shattering Justice. This thing reduces the enemy's armor by six (up to a maximum of 30) for a short time.

If you plan on playing the long game, including the Shattering Justice in your build is a no-brainer.

Because of how insanely powerful Shattering Justice is, you can only unlock it by reaching level 10 using the Miner without getting hit more than once.

Ancient Scepter

The best red item in Risk of Rain Returns is the Ancient Scepter. It essentially upgrades the fourth skill of all Survivors in the game to an even better one. When you use the Commando with the Ancient Scepter, his fourth skill turns into "Lead Shot." When used, the Commando takes their Shotgun out, hitting nearby enemies for 800% piercing damage!

Unlocking this thing is no small feat. You have to beat the game on Monsoon difficulty using the Mercenary. Good luck!
