'NES Remix 2' Gets Nintendo World Championship Competition Mode like 'The Wizard'

'NES Remix 2' Gets Nintendo World Championship Competition Mode like 'The Wizard'

NES Remix 2 is almost upon us! The sequel to the incredibly popular downloadable Wii U title will do more of the same- mix up a whole bunch of new NES titles in a mini-game collection- but it will also include a new mode that should get the purists among you excited. This new mode will be based on the iconic 1990 Nintendo World Championship event, which itself was based on the cult Fred Savage videogame movie The Wizard.

If you've avoided that or are just too young (or too bad) to remember it, it was a videogame competition that saw players playing through three games- Super Mario Bros, Rad Racer, and Tetris. These weren't full versions of the game, they were small snippets that made you complete certain challenges in a limited time. For Super Mario Bros. you had to find 50 coins as fast as possible, for Rad Racer you had to complete a custom course as fast as possible, and for Tetris you had to get as many points as possible before time ran out.

This new version of the Championship Mode also includes Super Mario Bros., and the other two games are Super Mario Bros. 3 and Dr. Mario. Players will take on three score-based challenges in each game to achieve a cumulative total score. Scores can be posted to Miiverse to compete with anyone who has the game. The one issue? You need also own the first NES Remix in order to play Championship mode.

Nintendo World Championships was actually made available as a NES cartridge for winners of the competition and is one of the rarest games you can find, with a recent copy almost selling on eBay for 100k. This will be a much cheaper way to get nearly the same experience!

Besides this new mode the game will offer new mash-ups of classic titles like Kirby's Adventure, Punch-Out!!, and Metroid.

NES Remix 2 will hit the Nintendo eShop on April 25, 2014 for Wii U.
