Aspyr's KotOR 2 Switch DLC Cancelled Due to Third-Party Objection: CEO Reveals

Aspyr's KotOR 2 Switch DLC Scrapped Following Third-Party Objection: CEO Unveils Reason

Aspyr Media's much-anticipated Restored Content DLC for the Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II has been axed.

Video Games Chronicle tells us that the cancellation, revealed by Aspyr's co-CEO Ted Saloch, stemmed from a third-party objection, throwing a wrench into the promised update for the beloved RPG title.

A Closer Look

The saga began with the Switch port's announcement trailer, raising excitement among fans ahead of its June 2022 release. Promising the Restored Content DLC as "coming soon," Aspyr initially slated its arrival for the third quarter of 2022, teasing a fresh experience for players.

However, hopes were dashed when Aspyr announced in June 2023 that the DLC's release plans were shelved. To appease disappointed customers, Aspyr offered a gesture of goodwill by allowing purchasers to download one of seven alternative games, including KOTOR 2 on Steam, as compensation for the abrupt cancellation.

Lawsuit Against Aspyr Media

The situation took a legal turn as Malachi Mickelonis filed a class-action lawsuit against Aspyr Media. The Gamer reports that the lawsuit, reflecting Mickelonis's sentiments and those of other affected buyers, claimed they felt "completely duped" by the unfulfilled promise of the DLC. This dissatisfaction led some purchasers to abstain from playing the game, awaiting the additional content's release.

The legal battle intensified as Aspyr sought to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that they had already provided relief by offering replacement products to impacted buyers. The forthcoming court hearing on the dismissal will potentially shape the future of the legal proceedings.

Third-Party Objections

What remains at the core of this dispute is the reasoning behind the DLC's cancellation. As Axios reports, Aspyr's co-CEO Ted Saloch shed light on the situation, indicating that a third party objected, thwarting Aspyr's efforts to deliver the promised content.

However, the identity of this third party remains shrouded in mystery, leaving gamers and enthusiasts speculating about the underlying reasons.

This development ignited a wildfire of reactions within the gaming community. Aggrieved by the cancellation, fans rallied together, amplifying their discontent through the class-action lawsuit, seeking refunds, and highlighting their reliance on Aspyr's representations about the DLC.

What's Next?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords' revival on the Switch breathed new life into the classic RPG, with the promise of the Restored Content Mod acting as a pivotal selling point.

Yet, the cancellation echoes the game's unfinished state on various platforms, leaving players longing for the anticipated enhancements.

The uncertainty looms as the legal battle ensues, awaiting resolution at the upcoming hearing.
