Battlestar Galactica Movie in Development, Will Reboot the Acclaimed Sci-Fi TV Series

The 2004 Syfy channel remake of Battlestar Galactica featured some of the best science fiction TV episodes ever aired, particularly early on when humanity was constantly on the run. The series ended on a pretty disappointing note, seeming to run off the rails a bit towards the end of the show.

But there's good news for fans who want someone to take another crack at the story and universe: a major film is currently in the works at Universal according to Variety.

It's still early so other details are scarce, but we do know the screenplay will be written by Jack Paglen, who penned the upcoming Transendence. Paglen is also set to write the Prometheus sequel. Original series creator Glen Larson is set to produce the Battlestar Galactica film, and Universal's executive VP of production Scott Bernstein and director of development Jay Polidoro will oversee development.

The initial Battlestar Galactica show ran only one season from 1978-79. It was briefly rebooted as Battlestar 1980, but that endeavor did not last long. The biggest success the franchise had was in the 2004 reboot on the Syfy channel, which started as a three-hour mini-series the year before and ran for four seasons.

The show focuses on human survivors fleeing the destruction of their home world after being surprise attacked by cybernetic warriors of their own creation, the Cylons. It was praised for focusing on more than traditional sci-fi subject matter, dealing with culture, religion, and existentialism. Keep an eye out for more details on the upcoming film--I'm very excited as a fan of the series.
