MultiVersus hasn't even been out for a few months, but it looks like a player's leaderboard rank has revealed just how many people are playing the game right now. Or maybe the game's player counter is still not working well.
Either way, a player may have indirectly revealed MultiVersus' player count at around 4.9 million players. According to PC Gamer, a friend of theirs who's trying out the game is ranked 4,929,968th out of everyone. That's after the player has figured in only 29 matches, with a rather impressive recent win rate of 70%. Well done.
There's no indication whether this is close to or is the absolute bottom of the ladder, or that the leaderboard goes even lower - perhaps beyond 5 million players. But if accurate, it does prove to Warner Bros' free-to-play Smash-like is turning out to be a massive hit among so many gamers. Or maybe they really just want to bash heads using Bugs Bunny or experience just how powerful Ultra Instinct Shaggy really is.
MultiVersus' player count, either way, has already put it on top of Steam's leaderboards. As reported by Shacknews, the new Smash Bros clone peaked at 153,044 players on Steam last July 27th. This number came just a day after NBA superstar LeBron James was added to the game's roster of fighters (mainly because he was the lead on Warner Bros' Space Jam 2).
The game's player count was also nothing to scoff at during its open beta, too. Player numbers always bounced between 20K-50K concurrent ones, but one thing to note is that this is just on Steam. Remember that MultiVersus is a cross-platform, cross-gen game available not just on PC, but the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Series S. Furthermore, the game is also available on the Epic Games Store, so the global player count can realistically reach almost 5 million.
With these numbers in hand, it can be safe to say that the gaming community was longing for a good free-to-play fighting game. And perhaps they finally got it.

MultiVersus' player count is far from the only interesting tidbit about this game that has come to light. For one, it looks like the world's best players already have their favorite characters locked in.
As reported by PC Gamer, the top five players in the world in the Teams category use Bugs Bunny, Tom & Jerry, and Shaggy. And it's also worth noting that five out of the top 10 players in the world are Bugs Bunny mains. The #1 ranked player in the world is Bugs Bunny main KoboldHeart, whose MMR on PC is a whopping 2,700 with almost countless victories using the iconic Looney Tune.
To cap things off, two of the top 10 players are Tom & Jerry mains, and the 4th-best player in the world is a Shaggy main (perhaps this will change soon with just how OP Shaggy can get). There's also a single Velma main in there and an Iron Giant main as well. Maybe these top players have already given you an idea of who to pick for your next game.
