Fortnite Will NEVER Go Into Crypto, Says Epic Games Boss

Twim Sweeney Makes It Clear That Fortnite Crypto Will Never Be A Thing

Fortnite cryptocurrency will never be a thing, since Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney made it absolutely clear that he's not a big fan of cryptocurrencies in general - even if Epic did take a stand on Steam's NFT games ban.

Here's how to check your total time spent on "Fortnite" on Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles.

Sweeney spoke out on the numerous instances of Twitter accounts promoting something called Fortnite Tokens. As reported by Eurogamer, Epic's head honcho confirmed that there's no cryptocurrency within their free-to-play battle royale title, also saying that any Twitter accounts promoting the aforementioned tokens as "a scam."

He also said that the company's lawyers "are on it," which could mean that Epic will be actually coming after these scam Twitter accounts legally. Furthermore, Sweeney added, "shame on the cryptocurrency marketplaces that enable this kind of thing.

In response to the Epic CEO's comments, however, the owners of the aforementioned Twitter accounts mentioned that the Fortnite Tokens initiative is a "fair-launch, community-driven" project." To which Sweeney responded that they're basically infringing on Epic's Fortnite copyright, saying that nobody is allowed to use the battle royale game's name and images without permission.

Either way, the owners of these accounts are going to have the legal battle of their lives in their hands. You have to assume that as a multi-billion-dollar company, Epic Games has all the resources to go after anyone infringing on its copyright - especially when there's potential for real money to be involved.

Sweeney's heavy-handed response to Fortnite crypto projects is more or less in-line with his statements from the past year, writes PCGamer. Back in October 2021, he mentioned that Epic, while deciding to allow blockchain games on its platform (in contrast to Steam), will not incorporate cryptocurrency into its own games.

Here's what he had to say:

[Epic] will welcome games that make use of blockchain tech provided they follow the relevant laws, disclose their terms, and are ae-rated by an appropriate group.

What Are Fortnite Tokens?

First appearing last year, the aforementioned Fortnite Tokens were first started with the idea of them being convertible into V-Bucks. For the uninitiated, V-Bucks are Fortnite's in-game currency, which players have to use when buying in-game items and other content.

Data miners have leaked the potential skins, cosmetics, and pickaxes in the "Fortnite 20.40" patch.

As per a report by Sportskeeda, the Fortnite crypto project (alongside others that were being promoted during the same time period, which is around late 2021) is designed to allow players to earn money as they play. Players can apparently purchase the Coins/Tokens with real money and canm be swapped for V-Bucks with a 1-2 ratio. This means that you get 2 V-Bucks for every Fortnite Coin.

It is these things that Epic CEO Tim Sweeney responded to last year, further reiterating that he doesn't want cryptocurrencies to be included in the popular battle royale title. For now, Fortnite players will have to go elsewhere if they want play-to-earn mechanics.
