After spending what seemed to be an eternity in Steam's Early Access list, the survival FPS game Survarium is finally closing its doors down for good.
Ukraine-based developer Vostok Games announced the "bittersweet" news on Twitter saying that the servers will close down on May 31st, 11:59 PM Kyiv time. Aside from that, the game will also be delisted from Steam, writes PCGamer. According to the official announcement of the closedown, Vostok Games says it is more like saying "farewell to an old friend."
Here is the Twitter announcement:
As previously mentioned, the survival FPS nevver made it to a full release despite spending 7 years in early access. As per Survarium's Steam page, the choice to go on Early Access was made so Vostok can develop the game "alongside the community." They never gave an exact time frame for the original full release either, which made the game free to play for the entire time.
It was first launched on 2015 promising players a PvP experience "where skills matter." In the original PCGamer report, Vostok's survival FPS was compared to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games which were developed by GSC Game World - a fellow Ukraine-based developer.
Now, perhaps the most obvious reason for the survival FPS game's shutdown is due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Vostok Games was among the Kyiv-based game studios who were directly affected by the intense fighting, announcing back in March that they had to "take a break" from their work "for obvious reasons."
Due to the fighting, part of the team had to move from the battle-torn capital city of Kyiv to other parts of the country. The original plan was for the team to go back to work when the trouble was over. But as you should know, the fighting is far from over.
Vostok Games hasn't revealed their future plans, but they did encourage folks to keep following the studio's social media for "future news."
The Best Survival FPS Games To Play
If you were among those who played Survarium a lot for the past seven years, you might be looking for a new game like it just now. So, here are some recommendations.
- The Long Dark: This game is almost nothing like Survarium, since it doesn't pit you against other players. But it is in every bit a survival game, which tasks you to stay alive in the frigid wilderness of Northern Canada, writes PCGamesN. You will have to battle Mother Nature, basically - wild animals like bears, the bitter cold, and your own starvation - this game was designed to keep you on your toes at all times.
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call Of Pripyat: Nothing spells survival more than trying to stay alive within the town just a stone's throw away from the Chernobyl nuclear plant. According to GameSpot, Call Of Pripyat is the "most atmospheric and compelling" of all games in the franchise. It features a lot of tense moments while exploring, which combined with the very bleak ambience creates a "fantastic sense of place."
- RUST: This game is technically first person, but it is not at all just a shooter - far from it. It is a no-nonsense survival game designed to keep you on your toes. It blends survival and crafting mechanics in a way few other games can, according to IGN.
