The term Cyberpunk might have left a sour taste in the mouth of so many gamers these past few years. However, the genre is still pretty much one of the most popular to this day, and this new game looks to combine that with another popular genre: battle royale.
Neill Blomkamp, who directed the sci-fi films Elysium and District 9, has announced a new cyberpunk battle royale title called Off The Grid. According to GameSpot, the game features a story-driven progression system and will be developed by Frankfurt, Germany-based Gunzilla Games.
The studio has already released a teaser trailer for Off The Grid, and it already looks pretty incredible:
Here's what the video's description says about the game:
"Dive into the heat of a covert corporate war in Off The Grid, a cyberpunk battle royale 2.0 multiplayer shooter where you shape the story and the gameplay. Unfolding on a dystopian tropical island, OTG sends you on head-spinning assassination and sabotage missions to the greater glory and market share of your chosen faction."
Blomkamp explains the game as follows:
"The approach is to try to inject the story in a way where players have the option of engaging straight up in the battle royale or have the option of diving into story and story missions, almost like a campaign that you would be playing to follow a story narrative."
Off The Grid has been revealed as the online multiplayer game that Gunzilla teased back in July 2021. This was after hiring Blomkamp as their new Chief Visionary Officer. He's been known for his skill at combining both nature and photo-realistic CGI to create immersive sci-fi worlds, as per his official profile on Gunzilla's website.
With the newly announced cyberpunk battle royale shooter, Blomkamp is making his debut as a full-blown game developer. It is expected to launch next year.

Cyberpunk Games: A Tough Pit To Climb Out Of
Games in the cyberpunk genre already have a tough road ahead of them even way before they're announced or launched. And sadly, this is once again due to the horrible launch of Cyberpunk 2077 almost two years ago. So that's the first hurdle that Off The Grid must overcome.
The second hurdle is the fact that other cyberpunk-themed shooters have already failed - in spectacular ways. One perfect example is Ubisoft's Hyperscape, which was shut down just early this year, according to IGN. The game was first launched in 2020.
For now, Off The Grid seems to be out of the spotlight for now as its release date is still quite a ways away. Aside from the details provided by Blomkamp himself, not much is known about it. But according to PushSquare, it looks quite obvious that the game will be next-gen only because it is being made using Unreal Engine 5.
The good thing to know is that you have plenty of time to save up for the right hardware so you can play this game when it's out.
