Gaming publication Famitsu has revealed the best-selling software in Japan over the past year, and most of the names are ones you would expect. Of note is the dominance of the 3DS, with all but three of the top 10 titles coming from Nintendo's handheld.
The newest Pokemon 3DS games dominated the sales figures, as you might have guessed, with Pokemon X and Pokemon Y selling 4.3 million combined copies between the two versions. The rest of the titles are also games from Japanese developers, save for one somewhat surprising title.
Grand Theft Auto V is the only western game to crack the top ten, selling an impressive 699,182 copies on PS3. If any game from outside Japan were to make the best-selling list, nobody would have blamed you for guessing it would be GTA V.
1. Pokemon X and Pokemon Y (3DS) - 4.33 million copies
2. Monster Hunter 4 (3DS) - 3.43 million copies
3. Tomodachi Collection (3DS) - 1.64 million copies
4. Puzzle and Dragons Z (3DS) - 1.36 million copies
5. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) - 774,152 copies
6. Dragon Quest Monsters 2 (3DS) - 710,303 copies
7. Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - 699,182 copies
8. Wii Party U (Wii U) - 697,042 copies
9. Yokai Watch (3DS) - 652,803 copies
10. New Super Mario Bros. U (Wii U) - 622,502 copies
The Xbox 360 version of GTV V likely didn't move too many units, as Microsoft's console has an extremely low install base in the country, so PS3 did all of the heavy lifting in representing Rockstar's massive open world game. Monster Hunter 4 and Tomodachi Collection should see North American releases in the next year, according to Capcom and Nintendo.
