The PS5 packs a massive amount of power in a relatively small package. But with all that power comes heat, and with all that heat comes potential damage to all electronics.
Considering how much you paid for your new-gen console (likely way beyond the original MSRP), it is understandable how you'd want to preserve it for as long as you can. And one of the best ways to do so is to keep your console nice and cool.
To help you do that, here are the tell-tale signs that your PlayStation 5 console is overheating, according to Tech Times.
- Your console will flat out display a warning message that says, "your PS5 is too hot." Sony built that into the console alongside an automatic shutdown protocol to minimize the risk of damage to its electronics.
- The fan is way too loud.
- A handful (or even all) of your games aren't running as smoothly as they're supposed to be. This is due to the hardware undergoing far more stress than normal from all the heat.
- Weird graphics glitches appear on your screen whenever you're playing. Or maybe your screen sometimes turns white, purple, black, or even green, seemingly out of nowhere.
If any or all of these things happen whenever you use your console, then it is definitely overheating. What follows are ways to keep your PS5's overheating in check so it doesn't die on you too soon-not when gaming systems are hard to find.

How To Prevent Your PS5 From Overheating
This goes to people who just got their hands on a brand-new console. To keep your PlayStation 5 as cool as possible, here are the best things to do, as per IGN:
- DO NOT put your console in an enclosed space with no ventilation. As previously mentioned, all of the power crammed into the PS5 will make it run hot if it doesn't get enough outside air to cool itself. As much as possible, place it somewhere in the open air, like on the top of your TV cabinet just below your TV.
- DO NOT put a cloth over it, especially whenever you're using it. You're not keeping it clean by doing so, but rather you're choking it off of air it needs to keep itself cool. DO NOT put it on top of a cloth, either.
- When placing the console close to a wall, make sure to leave enough space in between. This is once again for ventilation purposes.
Cleaning Your PS5 The Right Way
Consider this one if you've owned your console since day one. It's been over a year and a half since your system has been released, so it's bound to be caked in the dust by now. This is even more true if you've never cleaned your system since getting it-ever.
But before you clean off the dust on your console, be sure to consider these very important tips from GamingIntel:
- Make sure that your console is fully unplugged and that you've removed the stand. NEVER attempt to clean your PlayStation 5 when it's plugged in or even fully powered up.
- Gather the right cleaning supplies, including a microfiber cloth, some cleaning brushes, or if you have them: a can of compressed air or a small vacuum cleaner.
