Netflix announced that they would be partnering with Take-Two Interactive Software to create a live-action film adaptation of BioShock.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming service will be working on the project with the video game development company acting as its producer and Vertigo Entertainment.
However, they did not announce who the writer and director would be for the project.
Strauss Zelnick, chairman, and chief executive officer of Take-Two Interactive Studios, said in an article by VentureBeat that they are thrilled to share their vision and commitment with Netflix in making the BioShock live-action film.
He even added that the streaming service is the best and most forward-thinking storyteller in the entertainment scene.
He also said that he is co that BioShock will continue to captivate and engage audiences with their partnership with Netflix.
Released in 2007 by 2K Games, Take-Two Interactive Studios' subsidiary, for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, and Mac OS X, BioShock is a first-person shooting game that takes its players to a dystopian underwater city of Rapture.
They will as Jack, a survivor of a mysterious plane crash in the Atlantic Ocean, in the game.
As he ventures around the city, he will discover that its society is fragmented in a civil war with most of its inhabitants addicted to ADAM. This genetic material could grant them supernatural powers.
Jack needs to find a way to escape the city while fighting ADAM-obsessed humans and the large and deadly Big Daddies.
Since its release, the game sold millions of copies, and it was later followed by two sequels - BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite - expanding its dystopian landscape.
2K Games also released multiple remastered editions and bundle collections of BioShock for multiple video game platforms.
They are also planning on a new BioShock game that is still under development in their in-house studio, Cloud Chamber.
However, according to a May 8, 2021 article by Gamerant, Ken Levine, the creator of the series, will not lend a hand in producing the new game.
The new game, according to Techradar, will take place in a new location - a city within the Antarctic called Borealis.
This is not the first time BioShock will be given a live-action treatment. According to IGN, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski wanted to helm a film adaptation of the game after its release.
But due to financial issues and the R Rating that it might generate once it premieres in theaters, he eventually backed out and put the project on indefinite hold until it was shelved.
As for Netflix, this is one of many video game adaptations that the streaming service has worked on.
The famous of these is a 2019 fantasy drama based on the book series and videos game of the same title.
They also released Arcane, a 2021 animated series that tells the stories of some of the characters in League of Legends.
