First revealed during Sony's CES 2022 showcase, the successor to the OG PSVR introduced during the PlayStation 4 generation is reportedly experiencing some manufacturing issues, reports TechRadar. These issues are said to involve the headset's eye-tracking tech, which seems to prove problematic for Sony so far.

It looks like PSVR 2 is still lacking a definitive vendor to manufacture the eye-tracking components. But according to a report by VideoGamesChronicle, Sony is close to inking a deal with Tobii AB-a a so-called "global leader in eye-tracking."

Tobii AB and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) are currently negotiating with each other concerning the further development of PSVR 2. However, the former refuses to comment on the "financial impact" of the deal, as it is currently ongoing.

For the unaware, Tobii AB is well-known in the tech space for their eye and head tracking cameras which they sell at around $230. So far, the company has implemented its tech in multiple games over the past few years, including "Microsoft Flight Simulator" and "Far Cry 6."

Players can use Tobii's hardware to control the supported games using their eye movement. This kind of tech can prove to be useful in actions like aiming or selecting items and physically challenged gamers who can't use standard controllers or keyboards/mice.

However, some people see a bit of a problem with Sony tapping Tobii AB for the PSVR 2 headset. The latter's tech already costs a lot standalone. If they try to cram it within a VR headset (which Sony will likely have to price at around $399 at launch to appeal to customers), they might have some trouble reaching an affordable-enough price point.

But since the deal is still in the works, take this analysis with a grain of salt.

Everything We Know So Far About PSVR 2

Until Sony manages to ink a deal with Tobii AB for their new VR headset's eye-tracking tech, a PSVR 2 release date is still a long way away. For now, here is everything already confirmed about the next PlayStation VR headset's capabilities.

The headset's specs, as per GamesRadar, feature a pr-eye resolution of 2000x2040 on a 90Hz-120Hz OLED HDR display. It also has a 110-degree FOV and will feature a Six-axis motion sensor, a total of 4 cameras for the headset itself and its controllers, and an IR camera for eye-tracking tech-the one that Tobii AB will likely take care of.

As for a PSVR 2 release date, Sony hasn't revealed anything concrete. However, according to a report by Bloomberg, the headset is slated for a Holiday 2022 launch. If you want to get first in line, Sony has already opened signups for PSVR 2 pre-order information on the PlayStation website.
