Aside from the Metroid Prime series, which was first released in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube, the Austin, Texas-based game developing studio also worked on Donkey Kong Country games such as Donkey Kong Country Returns for Nintendo Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D for the Nintendo 3DS, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo Switch.
The last Metroid Prime-based project released before they focused on Metroid Prime 4 was Metroid Prime: Trilogy, which was released in 2009 for the Nintendo Wii.
While Metroid Prime 4 is still in the works, Nintendo focused its efforts on another Metroid game, Metroid Dread.
The said side scroller platforming game was first worked as a supposed-to-be sequel for Metroid Fusion for the Nintendo DS in 2005, with a playable prototype announced being presented in E3 2009. It was later set aside in 2010 but then revived to be developed for the Nintendo Switch.
The latest Metroid game was later presented in E3 2021 and then released for the Nintendo Switch last October of last year.
In Metroid Dread, Samus Aran will face the enemies of her past in the form of the X Parasite, which she had vanquished in Metroid Fusion after destroying a Biologic Space Laboratories station, while facing a new threat, the Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier (E.M.M.I.) robots, who are chasing her as she ventures around Chozo.
Along the way, Samus will use the arm cannon from her Power Suit and a new sliding mechanic to help her glide between small gaps, while she will be using missiles and a melee counterattack that she can do while moving.
Another item included in her arsenal in Metroid Dread is the Phantom Cloak, which she can use to make herself invisible for the robots not to detect her.
