Age of Wonders 3 Release Date is Here: New Entry in the Classic Fantasy Strategy Series Out Now [VIDEO]

Age of Wonders III Out Now, First New Entry in Classic Strategy Series Since 2003

Fantasy turn-based strategy game Age of Wonders III is available today, the first entry in the classic franchise since 2003's Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. The game was created by Dutch developer Triumph Studios and can be downloaded through Steam, GOG.com and retailers in select regions for $39.99.

The series focuses on conflicts between rival factions and races with powerful magic kings, queens and dark lords battling on turn-based fantasy maps. It has been in development for more than three years, and Triumph is glad to have completed their project.

"After 39 months of hard work, we're finally letting our baby out into the world. We're excited to let people finally return to the game they loved so much," said Lennart Sas, Development Director at Triumph Studios. "The new classes and specializations let players choose to play the way they want, rather than being hemmed in by the typical fantasy restrictions."

Some key new features included improved 3D graphics (a welcome addition given that its predecessors are more than a decade old), RPG-style leader classes (warlord, rogue, theocrat and sorcerer) terrain alteration, and a new tactical battle system.

There is a complete campaign mode, which you can play through with two different factions, Commonwealth Empire or the Court of the High Elves. In addition to the campaign and local matches, Age of Wonders III offers multiplayer competition via various modes and scenarios.

I played a lot of Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne, and hotseat multiplayer was a popular feature at the time. Shadow Magic did feature online multiplayer, but only through direct IP connection, LAN, or play by email--modern network and multiplayer features will be a welcome addition to the franchise. Age of Wonders III also contains several difficulty levels, randomized maps, and tools for user created content.
