Sony has unveiled a video showing just what you can expect from Project Morpheus. The upcoming headset for the PS4 was shown off in prototype form at the GDC last week and dealt an early blow to the Oculus Rift and Microsoft in the upcoming virtual reality war, showing that they had sunk many years into the development of this unit.
While the name of the unit still isn't finalized and the prototype isn't finished (things may still change, such as an OLED screen like the new Oculus kit has), it was working, and two demos were shown off.
The first was EVE Valkyrie, an arcade-style dogfighting simulator set in the EVE universe. It's one thing to engage in space combat and apparently quite another to be able to look around and see ships zooming past you. Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman noted how remarkable it was to look down and see his virtual body clutching the flight controls. "During moments like this, I briefly felt like I was actually somewhere else - an effect of 'presence,' a term that describes successful VR's ability to trick the mind and fully immerse the player in his or her virtual surroundings."
The second demo was called The Deep, which places you into a shark cage and hands you a flare gun. You're soon beset by a giant great white shark that circles the cage and you are forced to fend it off with flares while your mission commander yells commands to you.
You can see the video of it in action below. Expect to see and hear much more about Project Morpheus in the upcoming months.
