Spotify Offering 'Premium' Subscription Service to US Students at Half Price, Available Now for $4.99 Per Month

Spotify has made big waves since its debut, putting together a huge digital library of music that anyone can listen to at the cost of hearing short ads between every few songs. In addition, the company offers a Spotify Premium service, in which you pay a monthly subscription to skip the ads and gain full access on your phone. They're now running a new deal that lets current US college students buy the subscription for just $4.99 per month, half the normal price of Premium.

The deal lasts for a full 12 months and can be renewed three times. The offer is compatible with both current and new Spotify accounts. All you need to provide to sign up is a copy of a student ID card, transcript for the current term, tuition receipt or other document that proves you're attending an accredited US institution

Though those are the described requirements, the signup screen only asks for your name, date of birth and college--further requests may be sent your way after you complete the sign up phase to prove that you're really eligible.

It's not clear when this promotion will end, but presumably it's safe to bet it will last for a least a few years since they're offering three yearly renewals. There have been several models like this across other companies as these digital music providers try to turn a profit against rising licensing fees. Pandora internet radio recently removed its annual subscription option and raised monthly fees citing increased costs.
