StarCraft: Ghost - now that name rings a bell. I vaguely remember it being in magazines, fully previewed with screenshots and all. But it never released; it disappeared and was put on Blizzard's shelf long ago. But hope may be alive, according to Videogamer's recent chat with Blizzard producer Alex Mayberry. StarCraft: Ghost has not been re-announced, unfortunately, but its revival is not something out of the question, according to the studio.
Blizzard's Mayberry says that the third-person stealth spin-off to the StarCraft series is a game that Blizzard would “like to do”.
"I think the idea is still perfectly viable," Mayberry told VideoGamer.com. "I don't know if we'll ever do it but I think it's something we'd like to do."
"When we set out to do it originally we were GameCube, PS2 and Xbox," Mayberry continued, "and after we shelved that I used to say that at that time we were very ready to make a Blizzard game on consoles but those consoles weren't ready for a Blizzard game. We just couldn't quite get what we wanted to do just because of those machines at the time."
StarCraft: Ghost's development went from Nihilistic Software to Swingin' Ape Studios. The game was put on “indefinite hold” in 2006 by Blizzard after several development delays. The game was to star a female protagonist that specialized in stealth and acrobatics and take place after the events of StarCraft: Brood War.
"Maybe some day we'll take another look at that but I don't think it'll be any time soon,” Mayberry said in regards to a current-gen revival of the project. “I think it's an idea that still lives inside the halls of Blizzard."
Perhaps one day we will see StarCraft: Ghost release. I have no ties to the franchise as I've not played any StarCraft game, but the original concept for Ghost was always intriguing to me.
Maybe fate will deliver us this game. I'm not sure how many people still want it, but why not? … just so long as its writing isn't as terrible as Diablo III's. Uh, it's really bad, guys.
