J.R. Smith has not yet signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers though there is still time for the veteran swingman to sign up. He is expected to get an eventual deal, especially after LeBron James made it clear that signing him was a priority.
The thing is that Smith and the Cavs are $15 million apart and it all boils down to how much would be acceptable to both sides. Many feel that the numbers Smith want are more than reasonable and something most support players are getting today.
The problem is that the Cavs are pressed with luxury tax issues meaning they may have to negotiate for a lower pact. From that, Smith can either oblige or sign a short-term deal if he is bent on rejoining the Cavaliers.
If negotiations fall out, Smith may likely have to find a new home that can give him his desired price. And from there, the search for teams with available cap space is on.
Minnesota Timberwolves have space
One team that Smith could consider are the Minnesota Timberwolves. The club has $25.5 million free cap space which can easily accommodate his financial needs. However, it does lower his chance of winning another title, a different price he needs to pay.
Then again, it could be Smith’s chance to shine on his own. With the Cavs, he plays second fiddle to James and Kyrie Irving though it doesn’t seem to bother him. He already has an NBA title tucked under his belt so it may be high time for him to go for the individual awards.
The fact that Smith has not instigated talks with other clubs is an indication he wants to stay in Cleveland. But if Dan Gilbert is unable to grant him his $15 million request, it may be time to part ways no matter how reluctant Smith would be on the matter.
