Nintendo is recognized as a fairly family friendly company. So, obviously, they wouldn't want anything unsavory potentially ruining the experience for the social network system for its new console, the Miiverse on the Wii U. Swearing is pretty easily taken care of, but that's not the only way for gamers to communicate with each other. Using the tablet controller, players can pick up a stylus, and draw out pictures, which is a bit more difficult to interpret, and as a result, things can slip through the cracks. Things that in Nintendo's eyes, don't need to be seen.
Which is why it's not so difficult to believe the rumor going around, which says that in a recent Iwata Asks interview, Iwata and a development team actually implemented a system to detect penis drawings. After all, nothing ruins a good time quite like a bit of veiny manhood.
Reddit is linking a story from Play4Real, "where gaming journalism levels up," is reporting a very colorful discussion between Iwata and team, pulling some very interesting quotes from the session. See for yourself below.
"Kato: Kurisu-san suggested we study different types of penises in order to create figure out the relative shape and size people would draw. We spent a week doing that before we realized that we should have been looking at drawings of penises rather than real-life pictures. (laughs) We were very embarrassed about that."
"Kurisu: What we learned is that people enjoy drawing penises. Multiple ones. (laughs) The system was not prepared to handle that."
"Yuzawa: You know what surprised me. No one drew a single vagina."
As we all know, if something seems too good to be true, if often is, which is the case with this story. While the story links to Nintendo's Iwata Asks page, it doesn't mention a specific interview. And I looked, believe me.
This sort of thing isn't a first for the site. Looking through archive of stories, you can come across gems like "Pokémon Creator Admits Games are Anti-Christian, Aimed Towards Satanists" and "Danica Patrick Porn With Sega Characters Up 500% Since Inclusion in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed." Obviously these stories are similarly un-true.
But it's still pretty funny. With these sorts of stories, the site comes across more like a social experiment, feeding all sorts of humorous misinformation through the filter on the internet to see what or who might report it as an actual news story.
So if someone comes up to you in the next few days, talking about Nintendo's revolutionary penis filtration system, don't believe the hype.
In other news, I now have to go explain to my wife why I'm googling Nintendo and penis in the same search.
