Tom Hiddleston is more than thrilled to return to the role of Loki for Marvel's upcoming "Thor" sequel, "Thor 2: The Dark World." And why shouldn't he be? Taking the role as the main villain, Hiddleston helped bring together the super team "The Avengers" to shatter records at the box office. But more than that, it's a role he genuinely enjoys.
Speaking with Total Film recently, Hiddleston said:
"The best thing about being Loki is that he is my diametric opposite. Physically, he is a photo negative of who I am. Loki is dark and pale, and I am light and fair. Also spiritually I am not much like him either. Yet I feel an incredible freedom in playing him...He is a combination of mercurial intellectual ability, emotional ambiguity, rakish charm, charisma and provocative wit. He has a wicked inclination to mischief, underneath which is a well of spiritual pain. Both these aspects are central to his depth as a character: his unashamed and perverse delight in creating chaos; and his capacity for raw emotional expression...And - as my American friends tell me - he's kind of a badass! He's one of the richest, most rewarding, most fun characters I've ever played...Underneath the steely cold veneer of his trickster charm is a certain vulnerability and sensitivity - the wounded fragility of an outcast brother and son. His mind IS a box of cats though! But I love him."
During the line of questioning, Hiddleston was careful not to speak too much of the plot for sequel, saying, "I don't want to give too much away. But I can guarantee that you won't be disappointed. Alan Taylor's vision of Thor 2 is utterly brilliant. The journey continues in the most epic dimension and proportion imaginable. It's very, very exciting."
Little is known about the plot, save for the fact that a new villain, Malekith, will be introduced, and previously mentioned realms will also be explored. In the comics, Malekith is the ruler of the dark elves of Svartalfheim, one of the nine worlds of Asgard. The dark elves possess superhuman strength, stamina, speed and smarts. Malekith can also teleport, fly by transforming into mist and cast illusions. He is served by minions Bitterhand, Wormwood and Grendell.
Other returning actos confirmed thus far are Stellan Skarsgård, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, and the god of thunder himself, Chris Hemsworth, among others. The movie will also explore Thor's relationship with the Asgardian all-father Odin, as well earthbound companion Jane Foster, "Thor 2" follows the God of Thunder to other worlds beyond Asgard and earth. With the Warriors Three tagging along, among other Asgardian warriors, more mythical Norse creatures are expected.
Thor's fellow avengers also have their own sequels in the works. "Iron Man 3" is currently in production, and sees Stark go up against The Mandarin, and "Captain America: The Winter Solider" is set for a release in April of 2014, and will likely feature the return of Cap's buddy Bucky. There's also talks of other Avengers members getting their own movies so they can be seen in the inevitable Avengers sequel.
"Thor 2: The Dark World" hits theaters November 15, 2013.
